Flame Proofing (also called Fire Proofing) is the process of treating both natural and synthetic materials with a chemical (flame retardant) that reduces its flammability so that it becomes nearly non-combustible.

According to FDNY regulations an affidavit is good for one year from the date of application. However, the washing or dry-cleaning of the materials will void the certification.
